365 Project Day 71

Since I finally got my laser trigger working the way I want it to, I thought I would revisit doing water drop pics using the laser trigger.  This time instead of just triggering the flash, it is triggering the shutter on my camera and the camera is triggering two off camera flashes that are directed at the background.  After this I will try water drip collisions...  someday.

More experiments with bokeh filters.  This time I picked up some multicolored Christmas Tree lights from Hobby Lobby.

For some reason whenever I ask my kids for ideas for photos it always involves fire.  This was their idea.  Its great though because all those things I used to get in trouble for doing as a kid I can now do with impunity.

This is a shot of smoke just as it is leaving the flame of an oil lamp.  I thought it looked pretty cool.

Take a piece of black cardboard, cut out a circle the size of your lens, cut a small heart out of the middle of it, attach it to your lens, set a very wide aperature, take a blurry picture of an intersection when the light is red and viola, this is what you get.  The three bright red hearts are the stoplight, the yellow heart on the right is a streetlight, the blue heart is one of those funky halogen headlights, the bright white heart is a regular headlight and the remaining red hearts are taillights.

Tonight Zack and I went out to try and catch some "star trails".  That's where you point your camera to the sky and open the shutter for a long time and the stars will leave trails across the sky as the earth rotates.  We were out for about an hour and a half and only took three pictures!  This is the one that came out the best.  It got hard after a while because the moon came up and it was just too bright outside.

I was lacking any creative ideas so Tara set this shot up for me.  Its called "Pigs in a Basket".

365 Project Day 55

I spent way too long trying to repair a broken flash tonight and didn't get much time to shoot.  I had a left over red water balloon that inspired me to do this light painting for today's pic.  I slipped it over my little flashlight and turned off the lights.  :)

Another experiment with the laser trigger.  This time I was able to keep the laser out of the picture.  This was our fourth try.  We had to keep adjusting the timing so that we could capture the balloon just as it popped, but before the water had a chance to dissipate.  We dropped the balloon through the laser and onto a nail. Hope my garage dries out quickly.

So last night's experiments gave me the idea for tonight's picture.  The flash accidently fired twice last night and gave an interesting double exposure, so tonight I reprogrammed my microcontroller to fire the flash in rapid succession up to 25 times, 100 microseconds apart.  I think this would have come out better if Zack had been closer to the flash.

So I swapped out my laser sensor for a sound sensor and did some experiments.  This is Zack popping a balloon full of glitter.

A little acetone in my wife's sugar bowl and a little ignition.  Careful not to let it burn too long so I don't crack the sugar bowl.  Turn off the lights and snap the shutter.

More fun with laser triggers.  Unfortunately I still have not been able to get the laser to shut off when it is tripped so it is still showing up in the picture.  This time as it illuminates the dust and particles of the breaking light bulb.  No CFLs were harmed in this photoshoot.

365 Project Day 42

Yesterday's picture was of my prototyping board that I was using to build a laser trigger for my flash.  Today's picture is my first attempt at using it.  I dropped this egg in the dark onto my sledge hammer and it passed through the laser and triggered the flash.  A couple things I can see I need to improve, 1. Block out the background.  2.  Change my circuit so it turns off the laser when it is tripped so it doesn't show in the picture.  3.  Program in a few microseconds of a delay so the egg is a little further along before the flash fires.  But overall, not too shabby for a first attempt.  :)
